What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy has been practiced since the early 19th century as a holistic Western medicine that combines traditional wisdom with modern science to treat the body naturally. Naturopathy is described as ‘holistic’ because it seeks to look beyond symptoms to consider all aspects of a person’s health and wellbeing. Through the lens of Western science and an in-depth understanding of the human body and natural medicine, as well as the psychological, social and environmental factors that impact our health, Naturopaths work with their clients to identify and treat the underlying causes of illness. If you have ever been left frustrated and without answers as to why you feel unwell despite being told you are well, then Naturopathy just might hold the answers you need.

What conditions does a Naturopath treat?

Your Naturopath is able to address a variety of conditions, so whether you are feeling fit and healthy or under medical treatment, you can visit your Naturopath to optimise your general health and wellbeing. Your Naturopath can help to support your wellbeing across a range of both acute and chronic conditions and is able to provide natural health care as part of a conventional health and medical team. Your Naturopath can communicate professionally with other healthcare providers such as your GP, ensuring that you receive the appropriate care for your health condition.

When visiting your Naturopath you can expect it to be similar to seeing your GP, except that your Naturopath will take a more in-depth medical history with a focus on identifying underlying causes for your health condition/s. During your first consultation you will be asked about your current health, lifestyle, diet and medical history. Your naturopathic practitioner may also conduct a physical examination, take your blood pressure, check your pulse, biometrics, iridology signs and request laboratory tests (e.g. blood tests) if necessary.

An individualised treatment plan will be given to you which may include dietary and lifestyle recommendations, nutritional supplements, liquid herbs, herbal creams and lotions as well as bush flower essences, celloids and homeopathic remedies. Because naturopaths have an in-depth knowledge of interactions and side effects, they can provide safe complementary care using natural supplements and medicines for patients who are also receiving conventional medical and pharmaceutical treatment.
